Day 26 – Happy Australia Day! Lolita San Miguel classes

Day 26 – Jan 26 is a public holiday here in Perth so we can celebrate Australia Day

Celebrating generally means having a BBQ and lounging around in the pool, eating a variety of Australian foods, and listening to the triple j hottest 100

For me ofcourse it also meant another day of Pilates. And being a public holiday I again turned to Pilates Anytime to help me out.

Today I chose to do two short classes by Distinguished Instructor Lolita San Miguel. Lolita is one of only 2 instructors known to have been officially certified by Joseph and Clara.

I did Lolita’s footwork class and breathing class.

I always like footwork exercises (I have also done Madeline Black’s footwork class before) as I have very pronated feet and have suffered the consequences of plantarfasciitis and shin splints in the past. Orthotics or low dye taping improve my biomechanics immensely but I am aware of the need to strengthen the intrinsic muscles of my feet as much as possible and not just always rely on passive support.

The breathing class left me shocked that Lolita can continuously inhale or exhale for 30 seconds. Her lung capacity much be huge! I coped ok going up to 12 on the exhale but found it a lot harder to maintain the inhale. This makes senses physiologically as normally our inhale is about half the length as our exhale.

I find breathing exercises are a great way to relax and connect with your body before you start a Pilates class, especially if you are feeling stressed or anxious. There is a great little 2 minute song that I find great to practice breathing too, you can listen to it here (note: the woman in the story called Laura isn’t actually me). The lyrics are “Hey, you’re ok, you’ll be fine, just breath.”
