Day 23 – on the weekend I finally bought myself a new Pilates mat. It is a significant upgrade, not only looking far superior but being much thicker and softer and hence kinder on the tailbone.
An added bonus I hadn’t realised when buying it is that it is really super sticky. Not “I spilt cordial on the floor, ew gross kinda sticky”, I`m talking “one legged downward dog in a hot yoga class and not slide anywhere sticky.”
I do tend to sweat on my palms and feet and the temperatures in Perth at the moment make you feel like you’re doing Bikram Pilates (I think it’s about 100 F) so I was very happy with this extra feature.
So happy that I thought I should take advantage of my new mat’s awesomeness by doing Kathy Corey‘s standing Pilates class on Pilates Anytime. The class was a great way to review your standing posture and lower limb alignment and I could certainly feel my gluts working. It was also interesting to try some of the traditional exercises such as single leg stretch and double leg stretch while in standing. They certainly challenged your balance and flow. Standing is such a functional position I think it is important to make a conscious effort to include it more in Pilates workouts.
