Day 15 – Pilates Anytime mat class with Madeline Black

Day 15 – this weekend I have been celebrating having air conditioning during Perth summer by staying indoors and doing Pilates in my lounge room. Today I choose to do a mat class by Madeline Black via Pilates Anytime. To see the class click here. I have done Madeline’s footwork class before and my feet felt like they were walking on air afterwards, so I was keen to try one of her regular classes.

The class was a tad longer than usual at 67 minutes and included a flowing warmup that reminded me of the yoga sun salutations sequence.

The class itself had a lot of emphasis on hip work with great cueing to help you feel centred and controlled. Madeline also has a hip workshop on Pilates Anytime which I would to take if I get the chance. By the time we got to the roll like a ball exercise towards the end of the class I really felt like a ball for once! Usually I feel more like one of those reactor balls, with the possibilty of bouncing off to the side at any moment.

I have decided however that I definitely need a new mat. My thin pathetic excuse for a mat is just not cutting the mustard. My tailbone has been making its protests known since I upped my Pilates practice and the rolling like a ball exercise tipped me over the edge. It will be my reward for doing Pilates for 15 days in a row.

The other exercise I loved in this class was the one armed swimming variation which almost reminded me a bit of double leg kick. I remember doing this exercise a few years ago at a studio and being amazed that the instructor new such a great variation – I guess I know now where she got it from!

  1. Laura this is so awesome! Thank you for your detailed experience of your journey through Pilates. I especially appreciate that much of it is being done on PA. Even if it weren’t though, I think your blog is going to become more and more important as you go along. You are an instructor so you know what it means to transform yourself and others through Pilates. Though I wouldn’t expect significant shifts at this point, I do think a commitment of Pilates every day for a year with varying instructors is unique, if not rare and bound to be incredibly informative. I support you 100% however you move through this journey. Thank you for sharing so openly.

    And Madeline Black is truly a gift to the Pilates community. She was here this past weekend for another workshop on supporting the arms. I’m glad you took her class over there in Perth!
